Therapeutic Riding
At the American Paint Horse Foundation, we believe that horses have the power to
heal. That’s why we support therapeutic riding centers who work hard to help
children and adults with physical and mental challenges to recover on horseback.
The Foundation debuted its first-ever therapeutic riding classes during Summer
World Show 2009, fielding 63 entries. A total of 32 riders and 25 horses from
seven Texas-area therapeutic riding centers were in the World Show spotlight.
Three of the entries were logged when the Foundation granted a wish for a
youngster and his two sisters in conjunction with the Make A Wish Foundation.
They were able to ride horses and participate in their first horse show.
In addition to hosting its first therapeutic riding event, the Foundation also
established a precedent by awarding its first therapeutic riding grants. Each of
the participating centers received a $500 check from the Foundation to continue
their outstanding work in helping children and adults rehabilitate through the
healing power of horses.
Later in the year, the Foundation hosted its Vaquero Gran Gala, in Colorado
Springs, Colorado. Two local therapeutic riding centers brought their students
in for worthwhile exhibitions. In addition, officials from the U.S. Air Force
Academy discussed their Warrior Wellness program. More grants were awarded at
the event.
The Foundation plans to hold similar endeavors annually and will continue to
raise funds to support therapeutic riding activities.
When it comes to fulfilling the Foundation’s mission – to improve lives through
interaction with horses – therapeutic riding is a prime example of the value of
our work.
